The D.A.R.E. program was started by a group of Los Angeles police officers and school teachers that were concerned because kids were taking drugs. These drugs were destroying kids lives. The police officers and school teachers joined forces and launched D.A.R.E. to teach kids about the dangers of drugs and violence, and how to protect themselves from it. The police wanted to steer kids away from dangerous drugs and help them make smart choices, like playing sports and starting hobbies instead of using drugs and hanging out on the streets. The Carbon County Sheriff's D.A.R.E. program is coordinated by Lt. David Midas. It began slowly, in just the Jim Thorpe Area School District with the assistance of the Jim Thorpe Police Department and the Kidder Township Police Department. When some local police departments dropped the program, school admisnistrators contacted Sheriff Nothstein about continuing the program. Realizing the value of the D.A.R.E. program, it was a request that could not be denied. Lt. Midas now makes himself available to St. Peter and Paul's school in Lehighton as well as The Jim Thorpe Area School District and St. Joseph School in Jim Thorpe |
